Perception of Sociocultural Approach in Shaping Reading and Comprehension Skills (Study on English Language Learning at SMKN 2 Muna

Abstract: This research was conducted based on the finding that the reading and comprehension skills of students in SMKN 2 Muna English texts are still relatively low. Most students are only able to understand the explicit meaning of the text, have difficulty drawing implicit conclusions, are weak in critical thinking, and lack the motivation to be actively involved in the learning process. The purpose of this study is to describe the level of students' reading and comprehension skills in English material, explain the implementation of the sociocultural approach by educators, and analyze how the application of this approach in shaping students' literacy skills. This study uses a qualitative type with a case study approach, involving English teachers and students of SMKN 2 Muna as the main informants. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, while data analysis followed the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and systematic drawing of conclusions. The results of the study show that teachers who apply the sociocultural approach through collaborative strategies, integration of local culture, use of cultural media, creation of an inclusive learning atmosphere, and presentation of authentic reading materials. This approach has been proven to be able to shape students' understanding of the meaning of the text, encourage courage to express opinions, foster reading motivation, and help them relate the content of the reading to real experiences.
